Differential effects of gaseous and volatile anaesthetics on sodium and potassium channels.

چکیده
After 150 years of clinical anaesthesia, the molecular events that lead to anaesthesia have not been determined. This is not because of a lack of ideas [16-19, 56, 571. However, most striking to the observer is the paucity of long-term and systematic studies. The present review describes results from such a study. The long-term goals were: first, to understand how anaesthetics affect membrane protein function and second, to determine if clinical and molecular actions of anaesthetics rnay be correlated.

Sodium channels and the synaptic mechanisms of inhaled anaesthetics.
General anaesthetics act in an agent-specific manner on synaptic transmission in the central nervous system by enhancing inhibitory transmission and reducing excitatory transmission. The synaptic mechanisms of general anaesthetics involve both presynaptic effects on transmitter release and postsynaptic effects on receptor function. The halogenated volatile anaesthetics inhibit neuronal voltage-...
متن کاملRelaxation of proximal and distal isolated human bronchi by halothane, isoflurane and desflurane.
Volatile anaesthetics relax airway smooth muscle in vitro. The amount of relaxation might depend on the type and concentration of volatile anaesthetics, the calibre and precontraction level of the bronchi, and also on the species considered. These effects were investigated on isolated human bronchi. Isometric relaxations produced by halothane, isoflurane and desflurane bubbled on human bronchia...
متن کاملMechanisms of (local) anaesthetics on voltage-gated sodium and other ion channels.
Local anaesthetics have been used clinically for well over a century, but the molecular mechanisms by which they alter speci®c functions of the peripheral nerve system remained unclear for a long time. Investigations during the last few decades presented evidence implicating the sodium (Na) channel protein as a target for speci®c, clinically important, local anaesthetic effects on mammalian neu...

The gold spot mullet fry, mean length of 1.30 0.048 cm and mean weight of 0.05 0.007 g were collected from coastal creeks of Ratnagiri (Maharashtra, India) and then acclimatized to 20 ppt salinity. They were observed for the response to the two anaesthetics: Clove oil and Sodium bicarbonate. Effective dosage of both the anaesthetics viz. clove oil and sodium bicarbonate for the induction and re...
